Forex affiliate programmes and introducing brokers: how to compare the terms

Compare CPA, lot rebates and revenue share, with a worked example and practical questions about referral tracking, eligibility and partner agreements.

Two illustrated referral paths converge on one doorway, representing different partner payment models.

A forex affiliate programme pays a partner for referring eligible clients to a broker. An introducing broker, often shortened to IB, also brings clients to a broker, but may have a more continuing relationship with those clients. Neither label tells you enough about the payment. The agreement defines what earns a commission, which referrals count and what the partner is permitted to do.

For a publisher, educator or trading-community organiser, the useful comparison starts with those terms. A large advertised payment can be worth less than a smaller one if few referrals qualify, attribution is unclear or the cost of acquiring a client is high. This article explains the commercial models; it does not recommend trading or promise partner income.

Separate the role from the payment model

Affiliate is commonly used for a partner who promotes a service through a website, campaign or referral link. IB is commonly used for a partner who introduces clients and maintains a relationship with them. These are descriptions of commercial practice, not universal legal definitions or permissions.

Nor is the distinction always “affiliate equals a one-off payment, IB equals recurring income”. For example, PrimeXBT’s published partner agreement allows affiliates remuneration models specified in their offer, while its clause 8.2 restricts IB remuneration to revenue share. That is one provider’s arrangement, not a rule for other brokers.

An IB is also different from a money manager. A referral relationship does not itself authorise someone to make investment decisions for a client. If the proposed role includes managing allocations, start with the separate explanation of how PAMM accounts allocate gains, losses and fees, then establish the permissions and agreement required for the actual service.

What triggers the payment?

Under a cost-per-acquisition arrangement, or CPA, a qualifying referral triggers a fixed payment. Registration alone may not qualify. The offer can specify verification, funding, eligible countries and further conditions. Ask for the complete definition of a qualified client before estimating income.

A lot-based rebate applies an agreed rate to eligible trading volume. Check which instruments count, how a lot is measured and whether the rate refers to one side of a trade or a completed round turn. A revenue-share arrangement instead applies a percentage to a defined revenue base. “Revenue” needs a contractual definition, including any deductions. A hybrid combines payment components, each with its own conditions.

CPA pays for a qualified referral; a lot rebate applies a rate to eligible lots; revenue share applies an agreed percentage to defined eligible revenue.
The agreement determines eligibility, exclusions and payment timing for each model.

Recurring payment depends on continuing eligible activity and the agreement remaining in force. It should not be treated as a guaranteed annuity. Equally, a one-off CPA payment does not mean every click or every new account earns that amount.

Compare the same group over the same period

Consider a hypothetical group of 20 referrals observed over three months. Assume eight meet every CPA condition and the offer pays US$100 for each qualifying client. Gross commission is $800. Alternatively, assume the same group generates 300 eligible round-turn lots over those three months and the rebate is $2 per lot. Gross commission is $600.

MeasureCPA exampleLot-rebate example
Payment basis8 qualified clients × $100300 eligible lots × $2
Gross commission$800$600
Assumed acquisition cost$500$500
After acquisition cost$300$100

The final row excludes tax, staff time, payment charges and other operating costs. It is not net business profit. Both cases assume no reversals and identical acquisition costs solely to make the arithmetic comparable. Actual qualification, activity and costs can differ.

At $2 per eligible lot, the rebate would equal the $800 gross CPA total at 400 lots. That is a calculation, not a reason to encourage clients to trade more. Trading should reflect the client’s own decision and risk limits, never a partner’s income target. If only four referrals qualified for CPA, the corresponding gross payment would be $400 instead. The qualification rate matters as much as the headline rate.

Follow a referral through the records

Ask how a referral moves from a link click to a registered account, then to a qualifying event and a payable commission. These are different records. A website visit is not proof that the broker has assigned the account to the partner, and a registration is not proof that a payment has become due.

Request the attribution window and the rules for an existing client, a second partner’s link, a device change or a returning visitor. Establish which record is authoritative when a browser report and a partner statement disagree. Campaign labels such as UTM parameters help organise marketing reports; they do not replace the broker’s contractual referral rules.

A useful reconciliation follows one authorised test referral through the approved test environment or agreed verification process. Record the referral identifier, qualification decision, eligible activity, commission calculation and settlement status. Use the broker’s permitted identifiers and privacy controls rather than moving customer details into an informal spreadsheet. An unexplained difference should be resolved before increasing campaign spend.

Check the country and the actual activity

African markets should not be treated as one regulatory territory. Ask which legal entity contracts with the partner, which countries may be targeted and which activities the arrangement permits. Education, advertising, personal recommendations and managing money are different activities. A broker’s licence does not by itself answer every question about a partner’s work.

The term IB itself has jurisdiction-specific meanings. In the United States, for example, the National Futures Association describes IB registration requirements. That source illustrates why the label needs context; it is not guidance on eligibility in South Africa, Nigeria, Mauritius or another African country. Obtain advice appropriate to the intended market before launching a regulated activity.

Explain any referral payment to your audience clearly. Do not imply that a commission arrangement proves the broker or a trading strategy is suitable for a particular person. Forex and CFD trading can result in substantial losses; partner marketing should give that risk proper prominence.

What to request from Vertex

Vertex has separate affiliate and introducing-broker pages. Use them to identify the proposed route, then request the current written offer for your entity, audience and marketing channels. Confirm the payment basis, qualification rules, attribution, deductions, settlement schedule and any restrictions before relying on an advertised figure.

Bring a description of your audience and traffic sources, the countries involved and the support you intend to provide. The next useful document is a specific agreement you can reconcile against a statement, rather than an income projection built from a headline rate.
